Upma is a flavorful South Indian breakfast dish made from rava or cream of wheat. This traditional dish involves cooking roasted rava in water that has been flavored by ghee (or oil), cashews, urad dal (lentils), chana dal (husked chickpeas), onion, ginger and additional herbs and spices.

Ingredients of Rava upma sooji upma
- Make ready 1 1/2 cup of Rava/sooji.
- Make ready 1 of Onion.
- Prepare 1 of Tomato.
- It’s 1 of carrot.
- Prepare 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
- Take 1/4 cup of grated coconut.
- Make ready 5 cup of water.
- Prepare To taste of Salt.
- Prepare 2 tbsp of ghee.
- Prepare of To Temper.
- Take 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds.
- You need 1 tbsp of urad dal.
- Make ready 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds.
- It’s 1 tsp of chana dal.
- Make ready 10 of curry leaves.
- You need 1 of green chilli.
- It’s 1 of red chilli.
- Make ready 1/2 tbsp of finely chopped ginger.
This dish is popularly called as Khara Bath in Karnataka.At home we love to serve it along with a hot cup of freshly brewed filter coffee to make a complete breakfast with some fresh fruits on the side.South Indian Sooji/Rava Upma is an excellent breakfast dish.Its very easy to make and ready in Minutes.

- Roast the rava on low flame for 3-4 minutes until you get the aroma.Transfer to plate and let it cool..
- To a heated kadai add 2 tbsp of oil and add the ingredients given in the "To temper" section above in order..
- To that add finely chopped onion and tomato,once they are saute add the chopped carrots and saute for 2 minutes..
- Add 5 cups water, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and required salt as per your taste..
- Once the water boils,lower the flame and add the roasted rava to it and mix it continuosly to avoid lump formation..
- Close with the lid and cook for 7-10 minutes in low flame..
- Once cooked add 2 tbsp of ghee and grated coconut give it a mix..
- Yummy and tasty rava upma is good to go with chutney of your choice..
